TBT . . ¿Dónde está el restaurante? Off to Peru we go.

For this TBT we head to Peru circa 2008. Miraflores to be exact. We were still living in Costa Rica at the time . . . in a very, very small town.  This was part of our Big City South American Adventure.  Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Miraflores and Montevideo. And guess what we learned most about Peru. . .the food!!

Of course that should be no surprise.  Follow us on this food fueled adventure.

TBT – Mendoza 2008 . . . On Two Wheels

Once again in honor of TBT, we want to take a trip back to what we consider a second homeland for us:  Argentina.  While we did not live in Mendoza but rather in Buenos Aires, it was Mendoza that first piqued our interest in moving to this amazing South American Country.  Step back with us to 2008 on our first day in Mendoza staying in the city proper.  We only stayed there two days before heading off to Chacras de Coria, a small village located just a few km from the city of Mendoza, to stay at Casa Glebinias.  Highly recommended for everyone.  Both the town AND the lodging.

TBT: Bologna in August, What is One to Do?

Our adventures this week take us back to one our favorite countries. Italy.  We have been there a few times and each visit brought us to different towns and regions.  This time, in 2007, we explored Assisi, Bologna, Perugia & Torino.  But that was not the whole trip.  This was one of our most adventurous trips to date:  Paris, Grenoble, Annecy, Bologna, Perugia, Assisi, Hvar (Croatia) and ending up in Torino. TBT: Two Important Words to Know in Argentina

TBT . . .and what a tasty throw back it will be.  Today I want you to join me on a trip back to 2008 for a culinary tour into the world of the Argentina Asado.  No licking the screen!!

There are two very important words that one learns once they arrive in Buenos Aires. . .either as a visitor or a newly transplanted local. They are Asado and Parrilla.

According to Wikipedia,

“Asado is a technique for cooking cuts of meat, usually consisting of beef alongside various other meats, which are cooked on a grill (parrilla) or open fire.”

But from my limited experience, it so much more than that.

TBT: How about a Pastrami on Rye with a side of Chocolate Mousse? In Costa Rica? Yup.

This edition of TBT takes us to Costa Rica circa 2007. In 2006 we packed our bags and moved from NYC to a small town in the Central Valley of Costa Rica called Atenas.  Atenas is approximately 20 km from Juan Santamaria International Airport, and 35 km from the national capital city of San Jose, all the while surrounded by mountains and coffee plantations.

While the district of Atenas has over 25,000 inhabitants, the town itself (which is where we lived) has only about 5,000. Quite a change from the big city life we were used to. The best part of our decision to move to Costa Rica was that we got Flaca, our 4-legged offspring who has changed our lives for the better. But more on Flaca another time.

TBT – A Tale of Two Uruguayan Wineries

Today’s Throwback Thursday tale from 2008 follows on the heels of yesterday’s Wine Wednesday post about the very tasty Tannat wine.  It was during this trip to South America when we visited both Argentina and Uruguay, that we decided once leaving Costa Rica, we would make our next ex-pat move to Buenos Aires.  But let’s not jump the gun.

We were staying in Montevideo, the capital and largest city of Uruguay.  Montevideo is situated in the southern coast of the country, on the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata directly across from Buenos Aires.  Ironic that we are doing this on Malbec World Day.

So just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip.  This was our fateful trip into the Uruguayan wine country.
